Cemeteries

When I’m traveling and find that I have some down time, one place I like to visit are cemeteries. These photos were taken in the Matador Cemetery in Matador, TX. It’s extremely quiet in cemeteries and at one point, the hair on the back of my neck was standing up. Typical I guess This last photo is on a bridge while driving back home. In with the new… Thinking about the past

I took these in April of 2009. They were in the final stages of finishing the bridge that has since replaced the old swing bridge over the intercoastal water way in Matagorda TX. My good friend, CL Cook had taken me fishing in his boat as he had done many times before, when we made our way to the new bridge construction. There was more to this day than just fishing or stopping to take a few photos of a new bridge. Little did I know, It was one of the last times we would spend an evening out in his boat. I lost my friend to cancer in 2011, and although I do spend time here while working in the area, it hasn’t been the same.

I suppose things are ever changing… New bridges are built and old ones are taken down. You can enlarge the photos by clicking on them.

The Beach 1-5-12

This time of year there’s not a lot of daylight left after work, so it was great that I happened to finish up early this particular day. I was at the beach by 3:45 and withing a few minutes my mind was at ease and I could feel the stress malting away. I love sitting on the back of the truck, my ear buds in, listening to a good book and soaking in the view. It was odd when I first got there because I didn’t a single bird, but it didn’t take long before they found me.

I first visited the Birding Nature Center sometime around 2006. They had only been open for less than a year or so but even back then it was a great place to spend an evening. They’ve made a lot of improvements since then, so if you’re ever in that neck of the woods, you should plan on spending a few hours there.

The little things we seem to miss

Whether I’m hiking in the mountains or some place close to my house, I always try to take enough time to see everything, including the little critters. I’m sure I step on my share but you would be amazed at what’s out there if you just slow down and open your eyes to a smaller world. Here are a few examples of some of the things I’ve found on the trail. Either while setting on the ground taking a break or just taking my sweet time.

Summer time blues

IT IS HOT!!!
It’s so hot that I saw two trees fighting over a dog!
It’s so hot, the squirrels are handling their nuts with potholders!
It’s so hot that I can use my seat belt buckle as a branding iron!
It’s so hot that hot water now comes out of both taps.

Well.. You get the picture. It’s been really hot lately. Not just here in west Texas where we are basically used to it but it’s been crazy hot all over the central and southern US. Ugh!!

There’s a place we like to go in the fall, when the temps have let up and the days start to shorten. We rent a cabin on the frio river and spend 3 to 4 days enjoying the time away from the “rat race”. It a good place to get your sanity back after a hot awful summer. And that’s what I happen to be thinking about today as I watch the tempature climb. 99… 100.. 101.. 102.. 103.. 104.. Oh shit!

My Grandmother

Will be 94 this month!! She was born in 1916. She has lived through the great depression, dust bowl, two world wars, and many other conflicts. Woodrow Wilson was president when she was born and there have been a total of 16 presidents in her life time so far. When she was just a baby her family moved from Missouri to Oklahoma in a wagon. I can’t even imagine seeing the things that she has over the years.

Can’t make up my mind/Fishing trip

I’ve used several different themes lately, trying to find the perfect one. Looking for the one that works well with a photography blog and really makes my photos pop. Well… I changed again. I ended up going back to the theme I originally started with. It’s weird how that works huh? I’ve always heard that you really can’t go wrong with your first choice so in this case, it’s true.

I was looking through some photos I took this past spring and found some from an evening of fishing with a friend. I was working on the gulf coast, staying in my favorite little beach house and invited a friend of mine to do a little fishing. As it turns out, he was doing all of the fishing and I had my camera in hand.. wandering around.. looking for a photo opportunity. It was in the evening and the light was great but I was having trouble finding anything to shoot. I took four pic’s! This is probably the fewest pic’s I’ve ever taken at one time. I usually end up looking through the hundreds of pic’s I’ve taken, sorting out the best ones. But I will also say, all four pic’s were keepers which is a miracle in itself.

You’ll notice my fishing pole is setting out there all alone while I’m wandering around like a little kid. LOL.. Apparently the fish weren’t biting or my camera would have been laying on the dock and my pole in my hand. And next time I’ll remember to pick up the beer!!

Sometimes you just have to do it.

I’ve been talking about getting out with my camera more often but there always seems to be a reason not to. Well today I was waiting in line at the pharmacy for my flu shot. There must have been 15 people in line! Anyway.. after about ten minutes I decided that if it took each person 5 to 6 minutes to get their shot, I would be waiting for well over an hour and let me tell ya, there are a lot of other ways I’d rather be spending MY hour. I also thought it shouldn’t be so busy around 4:00 or so, once the senior citizens have finished and were back home.

Out comes the camera! There is an awesome lilly pond park between my house and the pharmacy and I had my camera gear with me so off I went. The sun was getting high in the sky so I only had about 20 minutes to get in some decent pic’s. The bees were everywhere and it was hard to get a shot without one or more trying to get in the frame. I thought my neice was bad. lol… The park as been expanded over the past few years to over double it’s original size. The pic’s you see of the pond is just one portion. I’d say it’s a good two akers in size. I ended up taking about 100 pic’s. Not bad for 30 minutes worth of work, huh? Most of them I filed away for later use but I wanted to post a few….
